What to Wear Under Motorcycle Clothes: The Complete Guide

When it comes to motorcycle riding, safety and comfort of the rider are some of the most important things that should not be compromised. Even when it comes to investing in outer wears such as jackets, pants and helmets, riders do not give much consideration to their under-gear which plays a critical role in determining your riding experience. The right base layers can make a person warm or cool depending on the environment and can also offer some protection in the event of a fall.

Let's discuss how to dress underneath your motorcycle wear depending on the weather, style, and individual choice.

Why It Matters: The Importance of Base Layers

So before starting with the options let us consider why one should bother to concern himself with the substratum beneath the gears?

Comfort: Long rides imply that the person is stuck in one position for a long time, hence leading to sweating, rubbing and even rashes. The base layer’s main purpose is to facilitate the removal of moisture, eliminate rubbing, and enable one to stay longer in the saddle without discomfort.

Temperature Regulation: The base layer clothing is useful in regulating the body temperate in that it is useful in keeping the body warm when cold and cool when it is hot.

Mobility: The right fabrics allow the riders to move with the clothes and be flexible enough to allow the rider to ride and act.

Extra Layer: Compression or armored layers are some layers that include added protection and cushioning.

What to Wear Under Motorcycle Gear in Warm Weather

Riding motorcycle in hot weather is even worse than in cold weather or in the rain especially if one is wearing heavy leather. Here are the clothes and accessories that one should wear to avoid getting drenched:

Moisture-Wicking Base Layers

Choose fabrics such as polyester, nylon or any other technical fabrics that do not retain sweat. These help to pull the sweat away from the skin and evaporate fast.

Recommended Gear:

  1. Compression shirts or athletic base layer tops

  2. Breathable underwear or under-rider shorts

  3. Technical riding socks (avoid cotton!)

Cooling Vests

In case of extreme heat, you may use a cooling vest which you can immerse in water. It is to be worn under the jacket and stays fresh for several hours.

Mesh Underlayers

Some riders prefer that their undergarment to be a mesh top and bottom as this will enable more air circulation between the undergarment and the outer wear.

What to Wear Under Motorcycle Gear in Cold Weather

With the onset of winter, underlayers are the first barrier of protection against the chilly weather.

Thermal Base Layers

Choose insulated or thermal full-sleeve tops and leggings that are made of merino wool or synthetic fabric. These trap heat while still allowing the air to circulate in order to facilitate the release of heat.

Layering Strategy

Think in three layers:

Base layer: Moisture-wicking and insulating

Mid layer: Fleece or light down for warmth

Outer layer: Your protective motorcycle jacket and pants

Cold-Weather Accessories

  1. Heated gloves or glove liners

  2. Neck gaiters or balaclavas

  3. Thermal socks or heated insoles

What to Wear Under Motorcycle Clothes for Everyday Rides

In your traveling or leisurely cycling, your base layer chances may be selected based largely on the requirements of easy mobility.

Armored Base Layers

There are some that produce armored shirts and pants which can be worn under a casual jacket or jeans. Ideal for urban cycling and it offers great impact protection without necessarily having to have extra thickness.

Moisture-Wicking Casuals

Choose practical and ventilated under-layers so that you can also wear them outside the cycling activity.

Underwear Tips for Riders

Although it may not be the most popular subject, having the right undergarment is a must to avoid discomfort during long bike rides.

Best Options:

Seamless underwear: Prevents chafing

Moisture-wicking underpants (boxer or brief): This product is very effective in preventing sweating and thus making you comfortable.

Padded motorcycle shorts: Extra padding for the comfort during long ride.

Do not wear cotton – it is a material that absorbs moisture and takes a long time to dry and hence is likely to cause skin irritation and rashes.

Specialized Underlayers for Adventure and Track Riders

If you are interested in off-road, touring or racing, then you will have even more specific requirements.

Adventure Riders:

The base layers are layers that help in regulating temperature fluctuations whether high or low.

Compression layers to decrease muscle fatigue

Quick-drying materials for multi-day trips

Track Riders:

Full-body compression suits under leathers

Thin balaclavas to minimize friction with the helmet

Race-specific moisture-wicking socks and gloves

Final Tips

Comfort matters: The base layer should not be too tight to the body but should allow free movement of the body.

Invest in quality: As for technical fabrics, it is worth paying a premium price for the comfort and durability of the clothing.

Weather considerations: Always have a look at the climate and dress appropriately.

Wash regularly: This means that the gear will be washed often, and this is important as it will help to eliminate the bacteria and thus reducing the smell of the gear as well as make the ride more comfortable.

In Conclusion

That’s why your choice of base layer is not something you should take lightly, it is as important as the other elements of your motorcycle clothing. No matter you are carving corners on a summer day or cruising through chilly mountain passes, it is your underlayers that can step up your comfort, performance, as well as safety.

They make their choices smart, their layers right, and the outcome lets them ride in total confidence.

Wardler rain coat

I ordered an XL to go over my jacket I usually wear when riding and it was perfect. The color is bright and it feels like good material. I would have given it a 5 but haven’t tried it in the rain yet.

Pleasantly surprised

Cleaned on a Facebook ad because the gear looked like good quality. Did a little prior research and other users seemed to have good experiences. I purchased a pair of leather gloves and was blown away by the quality. I have expensive gloves from the typical brands and these are on par but far less money. Already took them on a ride and they performed well. I did need to stretch them a bit but now they are perfect. Couldn't ask for anything more. The leather is quality, the stitching looks impressive and the styling is great. I'd highly recommend their gloves and will probably try other gear
