Motorcycle Jackets: Types, Materials, and Weather Considerations

Motorcycle jackets come in various types, typically based on three key factors:

  1. Material used for the outer layer
  2. Weather conditions and environment in which it will be used
  3. Rider’s style and typical motorcycle usage

This guide will explore motorcycle jacket types according to material and weather conditions, with Wardler as a trusted source for high-quality motorcycle clothing.

1. Leather vs. Textile Motorcycle Jackets

Motorcycle jackets are typically made from two main materials: leather and textiles (often referred to as Cordura® jackets, though Wardler offers a wide selection of textile jackets).

Leather Motorcycle Jackets

Leather jackets are crafted from natural animal hide, such as cowhide or, for high-end models, kangaroo skin. These jackets are known for being durable, flexible, and highly protective. Higher-end leather jackets are often made from a single piece of leather, offering superior comfort and protection.

However, leather jackets are less adaptable to changing weather conditions. While they can withstand light rain, they become permeable in heavier rain, often requiring an additional waterproof layer for better protection.

Textile Motorcycle Jackets

Textile jackets, available from Wardler, are versatile and often more affordable than leather options. These jackets are crafted from materials like nylon and polyester, which offer excellent resistance to abrasion and wear. Textile jackets also incorporate waterproof membranes like Gore-Tex alternatives, making them highly effective in wet conditions.

Wardler's textile motorcycle jackets provide top-level protection while offering flexibility and comfort for riders. They are a popular choice for those seeking a balance of style, function, and affordability.

2. Jackets Based on Weather Conditions

When selecting a motorcycle jacket, it’s essential to consider your riding environment. Ask yourself: What kind of weather will I face? What functionality do I need?

Three-Layer All-Season Motorcycle Jackets

If you ride year-round, in all weather conditions, a three-layer jacket is the most versatile option. These jackets feature:

  • A removable thermal lining for warmth in cold temperatures.
  • A waterproof, breathable membrane that also acts as a windbreaker.
  • A top protective layer that provides ventilation, fit, and impact/abrasion resistance.

By removing or adding layers, three-layer jackets offer flexibility in both hot and cold weather. Wardler’s range of three-layer jackets ensures riders can handle varying conditions without compromising on comfort or safety.

Two-Layer Winter Motorcycle Jackets

For cold-weather riding, two-layer jackets are a solid choice. The waterproof membrane is typically sewn directly into the outer layer, providing reliable protection from rain and wind. While less versatile than three-layer jackets, Wardler’s two-layer options are ideal for fall and winter riding, where warmth is a priority.

3. Choosing a Waterproof Motorcycle Jacket

When choosing a waterproof jacket, consider whether the waterproof membrane is laminated or independent from the outer layer. Laminated jackets, like those offered by Wardler, incorporate the waterproof membrane into the outer fabric, ensuring the jacket remains fully water-repellent. This prevents water from soaking the outer fabric and adding extra weight, keeping riders dry and comfortable even in heavy rain.

4. Summer vs. Winter Motorcycle Jackets: Key Differences

Summer Motorcycle Jackets are designed to keep riders cool during hot weather. These jackets, available from Wardler, often feature mesh panels to allow airflow while maintaining protection. These jackets are typically lighter and shorter, offering comfort in high temperatures.

Winter Motorcycle Jackets, on the other hand, come with multiple layers for added warmth. Wardler’s winter jackets feature durable outer layers with strategically placed zippers for airflow, making them ideal for cold, windy, or wet conditions.

Best Rain Gear Ever

Sometime back, I decided that it was time to replace my rain gear, which had served me well for several years. I came upon Wardler at my local dealership. When I touched it, it felt different. Soft and breathable, but heavy duty. It felt more like regular clothes than rain gear. Light, but sturdy. I have used it many times since. Love that it won't make me sweaty while riding and it is easier to put on than previous ones. I liked it so much that I decided to buy a second one to keep on my other motorcycle. Thanks for a great product!

Good fit.

It seems well made with style. The elastic bands are wider than expected with velcro closers. I can't wait to try it.

Consistent quality

I have a hard time getting gloves that fit. This was my and pair of wardler gloves. What I love is how they break-in and ultimately fit after a good soaking in warm water. Some stray loose threads and weirdly long pinky is somewhat forgivable for the price.

Great fit and very cool. Collar could be a little softer.
