How to Waterproof a Textile Motorcycle Jacket at Home?

Comfort is not all about being dry on the road when it comes to motorcycle riders. A wet jacket will weigh you down, make your body colder, and make you forget about the ride itself. Built-in water resistance is designed into many textile motorcycle jackets, yet this feature wears out with time. Rains, dirt, sweat, and frequent washing make the coating weak, exposing the fabric to leaks. Fortunately, it is easy and effective to restore your jacket's waterproofing at home, provided that you take the right steps.

Why is Waterproofing so Important?

Riders like textile jackets, as they are diverse, light, and, in many cases, all-weather. In contrast to a leather jacket, these jackets are plastic and are composed of nylon, polyester, or Cordura; they also require added waterproofing to stay dry in rain. Once that coating is lost, your jacket may not be as protective as you would want it to be. Not only do you stay dry but waterproofing also makes sure that your gear lasts longer, and thus it still works in the changing weather conditions.

Preparation of the Jacket to be Treated.

Your jacket should be cleaned well before applying any waterproofing product. Regular dirt and oils may stop treatments from binding to the fibers. The first thing to do is to read the label on the care inside your jacket to determine the way it should be washed. Wash the jacket with a mild detergent that does not contain bleach or fabric softener, taking out any liners, armor, or removable items. When machine washing is permitted, it has to be in cool water on a gentle cycle. Alternatively, it is safer to wash hands. After cleaning, the jacket should be hung to dry on the air. Do not expose them to direct sunlight or high temperatures because this may harm the textile fibers.

Using the Waterproofing Treatment.

When the jacket dries out, you may apply your preferred waterproofing solution. Easy spray-on treatments enable you to focus on the most vulnerable parts, such as shoulders, seams, and zippers, as the most exposed to rain. The process is quite easy; all that is required is to hang the jacket in a well-ventilated area and spray it all over, but keeping the bottle at a short distance. Wash-in treatments are also available in case you want to have an all-over coating. They are put into the washing machine and are evenly distributed throughout the jacket as the cycle goes on. No matter what, the best practice is to follow the instructions of the product.

Waking the Protective Layer.

A significant number of waterproofing solutions need heat to completely stabilize and connect with the fibers. Assuming the care instructions permit it, you may put the jacket in a tumble dryer on a low cycle lasting a bit more than twenty minutes. In case of a machine, drying is not advisable; a warm iron may also be applied. To prevent direct contact, put a thin cloth between the jacket and the iron, and also press lightly over the portions treated. This action assists in sealing the waterproofing coating to make it more lasting and durable.

Checking and Servicing Waterproofing

Once it has been treated, it would be good to test the jacket before removing it on the road. Direct some water on the fabric and see what it does. The waterproofing is good in case the water beads up and rolls off. Provided that it starts to soak in, you can be forced to reapply the product, particularly on high-exposure areas. The treatment should be reapplied after a few months or prolonged rides under extreme conditions to ensure protection. Keeping your jacket in a cool, dry place will also help retain its condition.

Final Thoughts

It is a viable skill that every rider must be taught: how to waterproof a textile motorcycle jacket on their own. Just a little care, correct cleaning, and the correct product will enable you to keep your jacket in good working order. A waterproof jacket can not only keep you out of the unpleasant experience of rain but also help you to remain focused on what you should – on the ride. You can prolong the life of your equipment, remain safer, and feel more confident on any trip, regardless of the weather, by keeping your equipment in good condition.
