How To Clean A Motorcycle Jacket

Your textile motorcycle jacket is an essential piece of gear, providing protection and comfort during your rides. Keeping it clean is crucial to maintain its functionality and longevity. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to clean your textile motorcycle jacket properly.

Textile jackets are typically made from materials like nylon, polyester, or Kevlar. They often include waterproof and breathable layers, making them versatile for various weather conditions. These jackets are generally easier to clean than leather but still require specific care to preserve their protective qualities.

Read the Care Label

Always start by reading the care label on your jacket. The manufacturer’s instructions will guide you on the best cleaning methods and products to use.

Remove Armor and Liners

Before cleaning, remove any armor and detachable liners. This makes cleaning easier and ensures that you don’t damage the protective elements.

Cleaning Your Textile Jacket

Supplies Needed

  • Mild detergent
  • Soft brush or sponge
  • Water
  • Washing machine (if permitted by the care label)

Step-by-Step Cleaning Process

  1. Dust and Dirt Removal: Use a soft brush to remove loose dirt and debris from the jacket's surface.
  2. Spot Cleaning: Mix a mild detergent with water. Use a sponge or soft brush to gently scrub any stains or spots.
  3. Machine Washing: If the care label allows, you can machine wash your textile jacket. Use a gentle cycle with cold water and a mild detergent.
  4. Rinsing: Ensure all detergent is thoroughly rinsed out to avoid residue buildup.
  5. Drying: Air dry the jacket away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not tumble dry unless specified on the care label.

Special Considerations

Waterproof and Breathable Membranes

Many textile jackets come with waterproof and breathable membranes. Avoid using harsh detergents or fabric softeners, as they can damage these membranes. Instead, use products specifically designed for waterproof fabrics.

Zippers and Velcro

Clean zippers and Velcro closures to prevent dirt and grime buildup. Use a soft brush to gently clean these areas.

Stain Removal Tips

Sprinkle cornstarch or baby powder on the stain to absorb the oil. Let it sit for a few hours before brushing it off and cleaning as usual. Allow mud to dry completely before brushing it off. Follow up with a mild detergent solution to clean any remaining residue. Mix equal parts water and white vinegar. Dampen a cloth with the solution and gently rub the salt stain until it’s gone. Wipe with a clean damp cloth afterward.

Storage Tips for Clean Jackets

  • Use a sturdy hanger to maintain the jacket's shape. Avoid wire hangers, which can distort the shoulders.
  • Store your jacket in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew growth. Avoid damp or humid areas.
  • Use a garment bag to protect your jacket from dust and dirt while in storage. Ensure the bag is breathable to prevent moisture buildup.

Wardler rain coat

I ordered an XL to go over my jacket I usually wear when riding and it was perfect. The color is bright and it feels like good material. I would have given it a 5 but haven’t tried it in the rain yet.

Pleasantly surprised

Cleaned on a Facebook ad because the gear looked like good quality. Did a little prior research and other users seemed to have good experiences. I purchased a pair of leather gloves and was blown away by the quality. I have expensive gloves from the typical brands and these are on par but far less money. Already took them on a ride and they performed well. I did need to stretch them a bit but now they are perfect. Couldn't ask for anything more. The leather is quality, the stitching looks impressive and the styling is great. I'd highly recommend their gloves and will probably try other gear
