Are Textile Motorcycle Jackets Safe? Everything You Need To Know

The textile motorcycle jacket is one of the most hotly contested pieces of motorcycle safety equipment. Since their inception, these jackets, which are frequently composed of cutting-edge synthetic materials,s have evolved significantly. However, compared to the traditional leather jacket, many motorcyclists continue to doubt their safety. This article will provide answers to your queries about whether a textile jacket can provide you with sufficient protection or if you're in the market for a new jacket.

The Development of Motorcycle Jackets Made of Textile

Thanks to developments in fabric technology, motorbike jackets made of textiles have become more and more popular in recent decades. Materials like Cordura, Kevlar, or Gore-Tex, which provide ventilation, resilience, and resistance to weather, are commonly used to make them.

The main selling points of textile jackets are their price, weather adaptability, and lightweight construction. Textile fabrics may easily include characteristics like breathability, water resistance, and reflective strips for visibility, and they are less heavy than leather. Protection from abrasion is one of the main safety features of textile motorcycle jackets.

Abrasion Resistance

Although leather has long been praised for its ability to endure abrasion, premium textile jackets composed of materials like Cordura and Dyneema are intended to resist slipping on asphalt. To meet or surpass safety standards, such as those established by the CE (Conformité Européenne), certain materials are subjected to extensive testing.

Impact Defence

Contemporary textile jackets have CE-rated armour in key places, including the spine, elbows, and shoulders. Some high-end versions even have airbag systems, which give additional safety by inflating when struck.

Resilience to Weather

When it comes to withstanding rain and extremely high temperatures, textile jackets frequently perform better than leather. Gore-Tex and other waterproof membranes keep riders dry and lower their risk of hypothermia, which can slow down reaction times.

Visibility

Bright colour options and reflective materials are common features of textile jackets, which are crucial for improving visibility, particularly in low light. Traditional leather jackets frequently lack this extra safety element.

Personalisation

Textile jackets are safer and more comfortable because of their adjustable straps, detachable liners, and ventilation zippers, which enable them to fit a variety of body shapes and weather situations.

How to Pick a Textile Jacket That Is Safe

Quality of Material

Choose jackets composed of materials that have been shown to work, such as Kevlar or Cordura. These provide outstanding resistance to abrasion and endurance.

Certification of Armour

Make sure the armour is positioned at critical impact points and has a CE rating.

Comfort and Fit

The armour will remain in place in the event of a collision if it fits snugly. The cushioning may shift in loose jackets, decreasing protection.

Adaptability to Weather

If you ride in a variety of situations, look for alternatives that are both breathable and waterproof.

Features of Visibility

In low-light settings, high-visibility colours or reflective strips can make a big difference.

Frequently Held Myths Regarding Textile Jackets

"Textile jackets tear easily."

Superior textile materials are designed to withstand tearing and abrasions, frequently matching leather in resistance.

"Textile is only for beginners."

For particular conditions, many professional cyclists wear textile gear, particularly for adventure and touring riding.

"Leather is always safer."

Textile jackets frequently outperform leather in terms of impact protection and weather adaptability, even though leather is superior in terms of durability against abrasion.

In a nutshell, are motorcycle jackets made of textiles safe?

Yes, as long as you select a high-quality model that complies with industry safety regulations, textile motorcycle jackets are safe. With superior qualities, including weather resistance, comfort, and affordability, they provide a stylish and adaptable substitute for leather jackets. Fit and protective features should always come first, though, as not all textile jackets are made equal. Always seek for CE certification.

A high-quality textile motorcycle jacket can be a dependable and secure option whether you ride on the weekends, commute every day or go on long-distance tours. Keep in mind that the ideal jacket protects you on every ride while satisfying your riding needs.

Be careful, ride sensibly, and make informed decisions!

Wardler rain coat

I ordered an XL to go over my jacket I usually wear when riding and it was perfect. The color is bright and it feels like good material. I would have given it a 5 but haven’t tried it in the rain yet.

Pleasantly surprised

Cleaned on a Facebook ad because the gear looked like good quality. Did a little prior research and other users seemed to have good experiences. I purchased a pair of leather gloves and was blown away by the quality. I have expensive gloves from the typical brands and these are on par but far less money. Already took them on a ride and they performed well. I did need to stretch them a bit but now they are perfect. Couldn't ask for anything more. The leather is quality, the stitching looks impressive and the styling is great. I'd highly recommend their gloves and will probably try other gear
